Promoting the proper use and disposal of pesticide and fertilizer containers on Nicaraguan farms
Goal: Minimize the hazards to local farmers associated with pesticide ingestion through more widespread use of community recycling facilities.
The liberal application of pesticides and fertilizers without appropriate safety measures and the improper disposal of their containers have led to serious health issues in Nicaragua—which, in turn, has attracted negative media attention. To address this issue, the country’s agrochemical industry, represented by the Asociación Nicaragüense de Formuladores y Distribuidores de Agroquímicos (ANIFODA), provides trainings to improve agrochemical handling practices and has constructed container collection centers. BSR and partner organization uniRSE are working with ANIFODA to identify best practices, success factors, and barriers to implementation, and develop a strategy to continue expanding the organization’s container recycling program.
