Occupational Health and Safety System in the Consorcio de Cooperativas de Caficultores de Guanacaste y Montes de Oro R.L. (Coocafé)

Goal: Evaluate and improve the occupational health and safety system of one of Coocafé’s member cooperatives and create a framework for replication in other member cooperatives.

Coffee certification systems can provide great opportunities for farmers to differentiate their products and increase revenue while at the same time helping to improve the social, environmental, and economic conditions—including labor practices—throughout the value chain. However, small companies in cooperatives are often unsure of how to interpret the results of certification audits and implement the necessary changes. BSR and partner organization AED are working with Coocafé to create training methodologies that help cooperative companies improve their labor practices, building upon current national legislation and international certification requirements.
