Lessons Learned from the Sugar Association of El Salvador in Child Labor Eradication
Goal: Analyze the successes and obstacles of the Sugar Association of El Salvador in the fight against child labor and disseminate the lessons learned throughout the region.
Allegations of child labor can threaten a region’s reputation and relationships with international buyers. The Sugar Association of El Salvador helped lead an effort to eliminate child labor from sugar cane plantations by working with different stakeholders, such as sugar mills, NGOs, local government, and buyers. BSR and partner FUNDEMAS are working with the Sugar Association to identify and disseminate best practices—through training modules and workshops—so that other companies and industries struggling with child labor can learn from and replicate these practices.
